Based in Newcastle upon Tyne, with remote work available for data and research; everything else is local or by arrangement.

Data & Research

  • Data Analysis

The thing that makes analysis useful isn't the analysis: it's working out what question you actually need to answer before you open a notebook, which is why I talk to people first, figure out what decision the work needs to support, then match the tools (Python, SQL, Jupyter) and the thoroughness to that. Previously at Wellcome, where the same approach helped a team of 200 move from monthly emailed SQL reports to self-serve analytics across a £5bn global research portfolio.

  • Data Engineering

Building and maintaining data pipelines, from API integrations and web scraping through to ETL work. At Wellcome I built pipelines that pulled grants data out of legacy databases, enriched it with metadata from across the organisation, and joined it to outputs like publications and their citations, so a £5bn portfolio could be analysed as one thing rather than a pile of systems.

  • Evaluation & Monitoring

Programme evaluation, theory of change development, and indicator frameworks, with particular experience in the charity and research sector. My philosophy of science background shows here: most theories of change neglect the individual, and if someone can't draw the line from their day-to-day work to the organisation's goals, the framework isn't doing its job.

  • Survey Design

Questionnaire design, sampling strategy, and analysis, including longitudinal surveys.

Photography

  • Travel & Location

Published in the Rough Guide to Japan and the Michelin Guide to Japan, with work sold to National Geographic and the Japan National Tourism Agency, and available for location shoots with sufficient lead time.

  • Interior & Hotel

Wide-angle interior photography, with experience shooting hotels and resorts to guidebook publication standards.

  • Miniature & Tabletop Photography

Macro and close-up photography of painted miniatures: Warhammer 40,000 and other tabletop collections, shot with good light, sharp detail, and backgrounds that don't fight the subject, and a record worth having of work you've spent hours on.

  • Pet Photography

    Dogs preferred, other animals considered.

Local Services, Newcastle upon Tyne

  • Knife Sharpening

Professional sharpening on whetstones, covering kitchen knives, chef's knives, and pocket knives, and particularly happy to work with chefs and catering businesses (drop-off or I can come to you). No knife too blunt, but I'll warn you if it's not worth doing, and I'm happy to advise on buying too: what's worth the money, what isn't, and where to look.

  • Dog Walking & Sitting

Experienced with dogs of all sizes and temperaments, and happy to discuss regular walking arrangements or one-off cover. No dog of my own yet, so yours gets my undivided attention.

  • Personal IT Support

Getting things working, setting things up, and explaining what went wrong in a way that actually makes sense.

  • Linux Administration

System setup, maintenance, and troubleshooting for Linux desktops and servers, available remotely or in-person. I run Linux Mint day to day and recommend it for friends and family, with Debian and Ubuntu on servers.

  • Event and Kitchen Support

General event support, kitchen work, and front-of-house: I volunteer regularly at the Star and Shadow Cinema, worked kitchen service at the (now closed) Magic Hat Café alongside employed chefs, and at The People's Kitchen do whatever needs doing, from serving tea and dishwashing to tech support and handing out groceries. Happy to help with community events, pop-ups, or one-off cover.

  • Websites for Community Organisations

Simple, maintainable websites for community groups, co-ops, and small organisations: I volunteer on web infrastructure at the Star and Shadow and am working towards improving their digital setup, so I know what community organisations actually need and won't charge corporate rates or add unnecessary complexity.
